2024-2025
Year-in-review

Working at the Intelligent Robotics and Autonomous Systems (IRAS) Lab at the University of Cincinnati has been a transformative experience. The hands-on research and mentorship have deepened my understanding of robotics and further empowered me to continue pursuing my childhood passion.

Participating in three projects over three semesters has not only enhanced my technical skills but also helped shape the personal, academic, and professional goals that drive my development. One significant opportunity arose when I attended the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Region III Student Conference. There, we presented our research paper on a 3U CubeSat mockup - a 3D-printed floating platform designed to serve as a passive object for studying dynamics and kinematic interactions between multiple satellites.

Control systems are fundamental to robotics and aerospace applications, ensuring stability and precision. On a personal level, I focus on mastering control theory, feedback systems, PID controllers, and optimal control tuning through practical projects such as the Helmholtz Cage and the Spherical Air Bearing. A deep understanding of these concepts is crucial for developing advanced control systems, particularly those designed for space and satellite servicing.

In addition, Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning are rapidly reshaping the field of robotics. To stay current, I aim to build strong proficiency in Robotics Operating Systems (ROS) alongside the above-mentioned skills. These will be vital for creating adaptive, intelligent systems capable of autonomous operation in unpredictable environments, especially those in low-earth orbit space missions.

Additionally, understanding entrepreneurship is a priority - to make an impact, focusing on the problem is a must. Through Start-up Weekend, Innovation Challenge, and other entrepreneurship-driven activities, I hope to gain insights into turning research ideas into market-ready technologies or startups, broadening my career possibilities, and sharpening my leadership skills.

Maintaining academic excellence is another crucial goal. Earning a GPA above 3.75 for Distinguished Honor and consistently making the Dean’s List reflects my commitment to rigorous scholarship and strengthens my candidacy for competitive research and graduate programs. I am committed to completing my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering by 2027, with key milestones including coursework, research involvement, and capstone projects that focus on robotics and control systems. After graduation, I intend to pursue a PhD in robotics or space systems engineering. My research interests lie in autonomous spacecraft control and AI-driven humanoid robots.

Professionally, I aspire to work at a leading robotics company, such as Boston Dynamics. Over the long term, I envision transitioning into academia as a professor, contributing to cutting-edge research, and mentoring the next generation of engineers. My current role as a student researcher at the IRAS Lab has been instrumental in preparing me for these aspirations. The experience has honed my skills in data analysis, systems modeling, and technical communication, which are crucial for both academic research and industry practice.

To continue growing as a Space Robotics Engineer, I plan to attend professional conferences, such as AIAA's, to stay current with technological advancements, share my research, and build a professional network. Taking relevant elective courses, such as Intro to Robotics, will help me further understand the basics of robotics and how to apply control systems for complex tasks.

Participating in challenging and advanced projects, such as developing autonomous robotic systems or AI-based navigation, will push me beyond my comfort zone and deepen my expertise. Networking with professionals and peers is also critical, as strong connections can lead to collaborations, internships, and future career opportunities.

In the next year, I am committed to maintaining a GPA above 3.75 for Fall 2025 and completing all assigned research projects each semester to produce work suitable for publication. Additionally, I plan to continue working at IRAS to finish testing simulations for other projects.

Each of these goals - personal, academic, and professional - builds toward a future where I contribute meaningfully to the advancement of robotics and space exploration. My experiences at the IRAS Lab have laid a strong foundation, and I am excited to continue growing, learning, and innovating. Through focused study, ambitious research, and proactive networking, I am preparing to help shape the future of autonomous systems and expand the frontiers of human exploration.
