Spring break trip

New Orleans, Lousiana

During my trip to New Orleans, I immersed myself in the City’s vibrant culture through its cuisine, music, and history. Our group participated in a scavenger hunt, exploring iconic streets and sampling local delicacies such as beignets, Po-boy sandwiches, gumbo, and soul food. The City’s historic architecture, including Creole cottages and the French Quarter’s lively streets filled with Jazz and street performers, provided deeper insight into its cultural roots.

A visit to the Whitney Plantation was particularly impactful. Walking the preserved grounds, I developed a profound understanding of the cruelty of slavery and the resilience of enslaved individuals. This experience challenged me to reflect on systemic injustice and deepened my commitment to social equity.

I also explored the New Orleans Jazz Museum, learning about the origins of Jazz and its evolution from African American communities. Understanding how Jazz shaped global music underscored the power of cultural exchange and innovation.

This trip reshaped my definition of a Global Citizen Scholar as someone who not only appreciates diverse cultures but also recognizes historical injustices and advocates for a more inclusive world. It taught me that being globally minded requires both the celebration of diversity and a responsibility to address inequalities.
